Common Situations Can Trigger Social Anxiety Disorder

When it comes to any psychological or physical problem, everyone is slightly different. Yet, over the years my colleagues and I have discovered many common scenarios that trigger symptoms in Social Anxiety Disorder sufferers.
 
Unfortunately, these common events can be extremely debilitating and make it nearly impossible to function in today's incredibly socially connected world.

I'd like you to ask yourself if any of these common scenarios remind you of situations that have created any of the physical or emotional symptoms of anxiety you have suffered through:
 
Public settings. When you have to sit in a cafeteria, classroom or meeting, do you find yourself convinced that everyone is watching or judging you? Many sufferers report that it often feels like everyone is talking about them or thinking negative thoughts about them – even though they know this feeling is irrational.

Being introduced to new people. To grow as a human being, people need to interact with others and expand their social circle. For sufferers of Social Anxiety Disorder, this can be a painful chore. They may find it hard to speak or manifest physical symptoms that make “normal” interaction with new people nearly impossible.

Eating in public. One of the most common trigger situations for Social Anxiety Disorder is public dining. Sufferers may worry that people are criticizing what they are eating. Or they may feel that people are watching them and judging their manners or hygiene while they eat.

Conversations with authority figures. Does speaking with your professors or your boss throw you for a loop? In order to prove the value of our work, most of us will have to interact with authority figures from time to time. People suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder often find this to be daunting and as a result, are often unable to express their accomplishments to people they view as superiors.

Calling someone on the telephone. The phone is quickly becoming one of the most common forms of social interaction – particularly with the growing popularity of cell phones. Yet, many people with Social Anxiety Disorder will simply stare at their phone rather than make an important call. They worry that they are going to “bother” the other person or “calling at a bad time.”  Then, after they finally do make the call, they may become even more anxious and worry that they said the wrong thing or upset the person they called – even if there is no evidence to support their fears.

The first day of class. Many sufferers of Social Anxiety Disorder find themselves skipping the first day of their new classes every semester for a simple reason – teachers often ask the students to introduce themselves to the class. This combined with a general fear of being surrounded by new people can make the first day of class seem like your worst nightmare.

Crowded streets or supermarkets. Have you ever felt “weird” or anxious while walking down the street because you are worried that people are looking at you from their windows? Or you go to a store and while you are waiting in line, you become obsessed that people are looking at you, your groceries or even your hair and making negative value judgments. You can become convinced that you are doing something wrong and feel your pulse race, find it difficult to talk to the cashier or even feel chest pains and muscle twitches. You get to the point where you think about running out of the store and/or never coming back.
 
These are just a few of the many common situations that can trigger Social Anxiety Disorder events.

When I was growing up I was a very confident, outgoing child. I had a lot of friends and did well in school. I seemed to be a happy, healthy, well-adjusted individual.
 
Then, I got to university and all of that changed. Out of nowhere, Social Anxiety Disorder crept into my life. I didn't see it coming – in fact, no one who had known me before would ever have expected me to become fearful or paranoid in social situations.
 
It was particularly hard for me, because it was so unexpected. I could clearly remember that for most of my life, I did not feel this way.
 
I knew that something was wrong with me, but I felt powerless. Eventually my Social Anxiety Disorder became so bad that I had to put my life on hold and drop out of school, because I was simply at the mercy of my Social Anxiety Disorder.
 
This was the most difficult period of my life. I didn't know what was wrong with me, and I didn't know how to express my problems to people who might have been able to help me.
 
All I knew was that something was happening to me – and it wasn't a good thing.

While my Social Anxiety Disorder was holding me back from going to class and interacting with people, luckily it didn't impact my ability to study and learn. If anything, it made me more desperate to understand psychology than I ever had been before.
 
Therefore, I set myself my own personal goal to learn as much as I could about my problems, so I could figure out exactly what had happened to me.
 
I won't lie to you – it wasn't a quick fix. In fact, it took me years before I fully understood Social Anxiety Disorder and how to free myself from this daunting syndrome.
 
Despite the fact that Social Anxiety Disorder is very, very common, it's not often discussed in the media and at the time, and there are still very few resources dedicated to examining and treating Social Anxiety Disorder.
 
But, over time I found the resources I needed. Today, I live a life that is completely free from social fear.
 
I'm able to interact with other people with the same confidence I felt in my youth. For me, Social Anxiety Disorder is a thing of the past.

5) By the time you get to the party you are a nervous wreck, constantly worried about your symptoms and what kind of impression you will make.

6) When you arrive at the party you try to talk to people, but become fearful that they are judging you.

7) It becomes difficult for you to talk to people. When you try to make conversation, you are so nervous that you say or do something inappropriate.

8) Eventually you either leave the party early or spend most of it in the corner not talking to people.

9) By the time you leave, you actually have made a poor impression on people and/or failed to be social.

10) You go home and replay the evening in your mind and obsess over your mistakes. You become even more fearful and additional Social Anxiety Disorder symptoms materialize.

11) The next time you are invited to a party you may be terrified of going, because you'll replay your problems at the previous party in your head. If you do go, your social anxiety may be even stronger because of what happened the last time you went.
 
Can you see what's happened here? Fear of Social Anxiety Disorder and its symptoms have created the exact situation you were afraid of in the first place. Along each step of your journey, you could have taken different actions that would have created a different result.
 
Yet, because of Social Anxiety Disorder you were unable to avoid the very thing that made you frightened in the first place.

Can't I Achieve The Same Results With Medication If I Have A Good Prescription Plan?
 
If you go to your general practitioner and describe symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder, one of the first things that he or she may do is prescribe an anti-anxiety medication.
 
While these medications are expensive, many people do have decent prescription plans or can otherwise afford them. In many cases, once you start the medication, your symptoms may seem to go away.
